Rebecca, not her real name, an adult woman from Hamilton Township, suffered from frequent migraine headaches. Her problem came to our attention when she accompanied her daughter to an appointment. It was during a discussion with the doctor, she reported that she suffered with migraines consistently since high school which sometimes were accompanied by vomiting. As she further indicated, her migraines could also be triggered by environmental changes and stress. During the interview she reported that she experiences them two to three times a week. They often disrupt her activities and lifestyle. Because her ongoing treatment plan was not always effective in stopping the migraines or from reoccurring, she agreed to start neurofeedback.
By the third session, Rebecca began to notice she experienced fewer migraines. By the seventh session, she reported being migraine free. Other issues were reported such as anxiety and panic attacks. Both of these conditions are also easily addressed by neurofeedback and were incorporated in her treatment.
Being encouraged by the progress she is experiencing in reduced migraines and anxiety, Rebecca is continuing treatment. A comprehensive program involving neurofeedback which is enhanced by stress management training and counseling has produced great results for her.
Rebecca reported that she is now migraine free and that the treatment was life changing. She cannot speak highly enough about the program.
Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that works by rewarding the brain with beeps and points for producing the desirable and more positive working waves. The brain then learns the new brainwave patterns and continues to produce them independently. These changes, once established, continue after the training.
As in the case of migraines, which are caused by an instability in the temporal lobes, once the instability is resolved the migraines cease. Positive changes can last a lifetime.
