What to look for when hiring a real estate agent Spoiler alert: It’s not about who has the most trophies.

Let’s get this out of the way: awards don’t sell houses—experience does. You’re trusting someone with what’s likely your greatest single asset, so handing the job to your neighbor’s cousin who “just got her license” because she seems nice is... not ideal.

You want a professional who treats real estate as a full-time career, not a part-time hobby squeezed in between school drop-offs and Pilates class.

When you hire an agent, you’re hiring their process, market knowledge, and network. Someone who “specializes” in three counties doesn’t specialize in anything. Your agent should be active in your neighborhood—and able to prove it with recent sales, local stats, and a solid grasp of what buyers in your market want right now.

Ask what resources they bring to the table. Do they have a marketing plan? Access to stagers, contractors, or top-notch photographers? A one-person show might work for open mics—but not real estate. You want someone with a support system behind them: administrative help, marketing pros, and trusted partners who keep your transaction moving smoothly from listing to closing.

Bottom line: choose an agent who’s knowledgeable, responsive, and relentlessly professional. Because this isn’t just another deal—it’s your home, your equity, and your future on the line.
