The highly anticipated first of two joint practices between the Eagles and Patriots wrapped up mid Wednesday in Foxborough. From A.J. Brown watch to a scrum between the two team’s special team’s units, there was plenty to take away from the two hour and 15 minute practice.
Here are the biggest winners and losers for the Eagles from the joint session:
Shipley has seen his role in the offense dwindle with the emergence of Tank Bigsby last season, but seemingly has a hold on the RB3 spot on the depth chart with Dameon Pierce missing time with a hamstring injury. The third-year put together a really good practice, getting involved in the passing game with the first-team offense, hauling in a pass on a wheel route for a solid gain.
Shipley being involved in the passing game this season could provide the offense with a mismatch out of the backfield as Sean Mannion wants to incorporate the running backs in the pass game.
There may not be a player who needed a big first day of the joint practices more than the veteran wide receiver. Having a rather tough summer, Brown turned into a reliable target for Jalen Hurts on Wednesday.
Brown signed a $6.5 million, one-year deal but $5 million is guaranteed making it a tougher decision to cut the wideout if he continues to struggle. Hopefully for the 29-year-old he can continue to keep stacking good practices together.
No surprise here, Hunt has been a stadnout all summer long for the Eagles. He made some plays during the joint session and continues to turn heads.
He recorded what would have been a sack in a real game against Drake Maye and led an active pass rush for the Eagles. With DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon limited in the joint practice, Wicks became the de facto WR1 Wednesday. He had some good moments during the session, highlighted by this insane win off the line of scrimmage.
Wicks went down with an apparent injury early in the practice but did return to the field. He and Jalen Hurts have built a strong connection so far this summer.
Woolen earned a ton of high praise for how well he looked in the spring. However, during training camp, there has been some mixed results for the new cornerback. On Wednesday, that theme continued where he made some plays but then beat on others, primarily by A.J. Brown who expectedly was playing with a little more juice going up against his former team.
There is going to be high variance with the athletic cornerback througout the season. The Eagles hope the majority of it sways in their favor.
Looking to bounce back after posting his second-worst FG% of his career last season, Elliott made just two of his five kicks in relatively favorable kicking conditions.
The Eagles do not have another kicker on the roster to create competition for Elliott, but that could potentially change if he continues to struggle.More and more time missed by the rookie wideout only hinders Lemon's chances to be fully utilized come Week 1 of the regular season. The 20th overall pick was limited in the joint practice and was seen on the side fields working out and walking around.
There does seem to be some good news, though. After the practice, Lemon was seen running routes and doing drills similar to what DeVonta Smith did the other day before becoming more a participant.
Perhaps Lemon is on the same trajectory and ramp back up in the next day or two and take physical reps instead of just the mental ones.
The two teams hit the field tomorrow for the second and final joint practice of the week before they play each other on Saturday for their Week 2 preseason matchup.
