Eagles Training Camp: Campbell and Baun to lead LBs, rookie struggles

Posted

After what was an exciting and refreshing start to training camp on Wednesday, the Philadelphia Eagles took the field once again at the Jefferson Health Training Complex for the second day of camp.

Unlike Wednesday’s start where news broke that newly added EDGE Jonathan  was announced placed on the PUP List, there were no injuries to report at the start.

Here are some observations from beat writers who attended the practice.

Changes on defense

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spoke to the media in the morning and provided some insightful information regarding some of his defensive personnel as PHLY’s EJ Smith lays out.

The offices of Baun and Campbell

With Cambpell no longer cross-training at EDGE, it allows the second-year to focus on being a menace in the middle of the field as an off-ball inside linebacker alongside Zack Baun who continues to elevate as a leader and will wear the dot this season, which was Dean’s role.

The former first-round pick in last year’s draft showed signs of his ability to play at a high level in the NFL in place of Nakobe Dean. Campbell lost his starting job, no fault of his own, once Dean came back, but showed maturity handling taking a back seat to the veteran.

"Nakobe Dean is a smart player and I learned the details from him," Campbell said to the media after the practice.  "I loved his game a lot and I definitely learn a lot from him."

Last season, Campbell was the 14th-highest graded linebacker and fifth-best in coverage per PFF. He finished with 62 solo tackles on the season and generated 14 pressures.

“Whatever Vic says, he’s the big dog,” Campbell said about going back and forth between the inside and outside. “I believe in Coach Fangio and his process about how he wants things to look like in his defense. We put all of our trust in him. We just go out there and execute.”

Rolling out the Tank

Tank Bigsby reportedly was featured quite heavily for the second straight day of camp, finding the endzone on a rushing play while also hauling in a pass over the middle from Jalen Hurts.

Bigsby enters his first, full-season with the Eagles after being traded from Jacksonville early last season.

A lot of fans were clamoring to see more of the young, explosive running back last season. They might get their wish here in 2026.

Tough day for rookie QB

Cole Payton, the intriguing fifth-round, dual-threat pick out of North Dakota State had a tough day, throwing three interceptions with two coming on consecutive plays according to Sports Illustrated's Ed Kracz.

Keep your eyes out for A.J. Epenesa, the former Buffalo Bill who could be a sneaky roster candidate at EDGE.

Where is Eli?

For the second straight practice, there appeared to be nothing noteworthy to report on regarding the play of second-round pick Eli Stowers. The tight end is a very athletic and talented weapon the Eagles hope to see as the heir apparent to Dallas Goedert.

However, aside from this video of him going through blocking drills, there hasn’t been much noise on the Stowers front up to this point.

Building a connection

Last but certainly not least, although Hurts did not have a great day according to WIP’s Eliot Shorr-Parks, the quarterback made a fantastic throw to one of his newest targets in Dontayvion Wicks.

Wicks is expected to play a rather large role in the offense and with his familiarity with Sean Mannion in Green Bay, the more plays like the one described the duo can make, the better it will be for the offense who is going with a by committee approach to replace the production left by A.J. Brown.
