Eagles Training Camp: A new partnership is forming in Philly's offense

Posted

The Eagles hit the field with pads for the final time this week ahead oftheir first preseason game when they visit the Baltimore Ravens for a night tilt on Saturday. The team will have a closed walkthrough on Friday to put the final touches on the gameplan for the game.

While starters at key positions are still to be determined according to head coach Nick Sirianni, here are the biggest takeaways and observations from Day 11 of training camp.

DeJean and Mitchell miss practice

Both Quinyon Mitchell (glute) and Cooper DeJean (groin) were on the field but did not participate in practice.

Mitchell reportedly suffered an injury during Tuesday’s practice forcing him to be sidelined for the rest of the afternoon. DeJean’s injury is a bit more of a surprise as he fully participated.

More Houskeeping

On top of the two best cornerbacks on the roster missing the practice, wideouts DeVonta Smith and Makai Lemon missed their seventh practice as they continue to work back from their hamstring injuries.

Smith seems to be closer than Lemon in terms of a return, with the veteran seen running routes Thursday.

Lemon had his helmet on but spent the majority of his time at the JUGS machine for a second straight day working on his hands but also took some passes in from Jalen Hurts after practice.

Here is the rest of the injury report:

McWilliams impressing

Cornerback Mac McWilliams has been stacking good performances on the field over the last few days. The fifth round pick out of UCF last season earned some praise from Vic Fangio as a rookie and with a noticeable difference in his play this summer, the defensive coordinator has taken notice.

“A lot different. He’s just matured,” Fangio said on Tuesday.

“I’ve had a way of phrasing it to him that I really can’t say here, but he’s done much better. It’s been more than just the last few days. It’s been pretty much all camp and in the short offseason.”

McWilliams continued his pace on Thursday, intercepting Hurts during 7-on-7s on a pass intended to Hollywood Brown.

McWilliams played in just 28 defensive snaps last season with the bulk coming in the final game of the season against Washington when he lined up for 21 of them.  He looks to serve as a solid depth piece in the cornerback room.

Hurts/Wicks connection continues to grow

The former Green Bay Packer has put together a really solid summer so far and seemingly has become Hurts' favorite target without Smith and Lemon being available.

The two connected for another touchdown on Thursday.

As it stands, Wicks more than likely slots in at WR2 behind Smith with Lemon missing so much time on the field.

Last season, the fourth-year wideout hauled in 30 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games with seven being starts.

Weapon G

Dallas Goedert was a weapon in the red zone last season for the Eagles en route to a historic campaign. Of his 11 regular season touchdowns, 10 were inside the red zone.

On Thursday, he hauled in a four-yard score continuing to be a mismatch inside the 20.

Fight!

With the temperature sweltering each day in South Philly and guys going up against one another constantly, tempers can sometimes flare during training camp. That happened Thursday as the team had its first fight of the camp practices between Fred Johnson and Moro Ojomo.

The Eagles visit the Baltimore Ravens with a 7 p.m. kickoff on Saturday night. to begin their preseason schedule.
