The Philadelphia Phillies suffered a blow to their outfield. The team announced on Friday that outfielder Adolis Garcia is being placed on the 60-day IL with a right latissimus dorsi tear. Prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr was promoted to the big league roster.
The team also announced newly acquired outfielder Derek Hill has reported to the team and outfielder Steward Berroa was placed on paternity leave.
It’s not often that a hitter batting .195 on the season would be viewed as a big loss for a team, but despite the lack of production at the plate, Garcia was playing well defensively in right field for the Phillies.
He was injured while making a throw home in Wednesday’s 7-4 series clinching win.
The outfielder signed a one-year, $10 million contract in the offseason to replace Nick Castellanos in right field.
While the numbers were not great at the plate hitting .195 with a .599 OPS in 67 games with seven home runs and 21 RBIs, the ripple effect that the injury causes is arguably the biggest shockwave the team will feel.
The outfield now features Brandon Marsh, who is having an All-Star caliber season, a struggling rookie in Justin Crawford, newly added Derek Hill who will platoon alongside the left-hand hitting Rincones Jr. in right field at times. The outfield depth has a whole is paper thin.
The outfield prospect is ranked the sixth-best prospect in the Phillies’ organization according to MLB Pipeline. The 25-year-old missed most of this season due to knee injuries he suffered during spring training.
So far this season, Rincones Jr. has played in 22 total games between Low-A Clearwater and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. With the IronPigs he hit .239 with a .628 OPS in 12 games with a pair of doubles and five RBIs.
Last season, Rincones Jr. showed he could mash right-handed pitching. Against right-handers he hit .261 with an .873 OPS with all of his home runs coming against right-handers.
Overall, he slashed .240/.370/.430 with an .800 OPS in 119 games with the IronPigs and tied for the International League with 80 walks. He smacked 18 home runs and drove in 73 runs.
He is expected to play right field to fill the void left by Garcia in a platoon role with Hill who is a career .272 hitter posting a .780 OPS against lefties.
The Phillies begin a three-game series Friday night in Milwaukee as they take on the NL Central leading Brewers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m.
