Phillies waste Painter’s gem in 1-0 loss to Diamondbacks

Posted

Far too often this season, the Phillies have left a game hanging in the balance by not putting runs on the scoreboard. While they didn’t have many opportunities to do so at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona on Wednesday afternoon, the Phillies offense produced just three hits on getaway day, which allowed the Diamondbacks to slither away with a 1-0 shutout win after Jared McCann’s eighth-inning home run served as the only scoreboard-flipping moment of the contest.

It was a disappointing result after Andrew Painter kept Arizona confused across the first seven innings, allowing only two hits, no walks, and striking out seven hitters. The rookie gave the road club every opportunity to walk away with a sweep, but the offense could not find a clutch hit on the afternoon against a cavalcade of Diamondbacks relievers.

Phillies offense contained by Arizona’s bullpen

The Phillies lineup looked off-balance at the plate all afternoon as Arizona trotted out seven pitchers to handle the series finale against Philly. Derek Law, Taylor Clarke, Kevin Ginkel, Jose Cabrera, Brandyn Garcia, Jonathan Loaisiga, and Juan Morrillo combined to limit the Phillies offense to three hits, including two to outfielder Bryan De La Cruz in the nine-hole of the lineup. Leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber was unable to take advantage of those hits with a 0-for-4 performance at the plate.

Bryce Harper extended his on-base streak to 35 games following a walk in the first inning. He will join Schwarber (47-game on-base streak between 2024-2025) inside the Phillies' top 10 if he can reach the 40-game plateau. The all-time single-season record in Phillies history is 49 games by Chuck Klein in 1940, while the all-time franchise record is owned by Michael Jack Schmidt at 56 games between the 1981-1982 seasons.

Painter dazzles through 7 innings

Painter's calm temperament on the mound made you forget he was a rookie on Wednesday afternoon. He limited the Diamondbacks to two hits over seven innings, didn’t walk anyone, and struck out six batters. It is the third time he’s pitched a two-hit outing since finding his form from Lehigh Valley (AAA) in July.

The 23-year-old record (3-8) or earned run average (5.95 ERA) likely won’t impress anyone outside of the Delaware Valley. Painter has added two wins to his resume with five no-decisions since returning to the big league.

Painter has logged 40 innings across seven starts while quietly becoming a trusted arm in the rotation as the Phillies head down the stretch. That could be an important development for the Phillies as they battle for playoff position in the National League over the final month of the season.

Bowlan blows it in the 8th Inning

Don Mattingly selected Jonathan Bowlan out of the bullpen for the bottom of the eighth inning in a scoreless ballgame. His first pitch was launched 409 feet into the left field seats by James McCann for a 1-0 Diamondbacks lead. It was quite the gut punch for Phillies supporters who had just watched Painter’s gem get spoiled on the first pitch his relievers threw. Bowlan did not give up another hit, but the damage was already done to the scoreboard after his first toss.

Philadelphia tried to find the rally magic once again in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t meant to be in a 1-0 shutout loss in Phoenix. The Phillies take two out of three in the series and won six out of nine games of this West Coast road trip through Seattle, Los Angeles, and Arizona.

Phillies battle Braves in crucial series this weekend

After an off day on Thursday, Philadelphia hosts the Atlanta Braves to start a pivotal four-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Cristopher Sanchez battles Chris Sale in the series opener at 6:40 p.m. on Friday night.

The Phillies are playing their best baseball as the season draws to a close, but there have been far too many outings with three hits like Wednesday afternoon’s 1-0 shutout loss during the 2026 campaign. That type of offensive performance could lead to disastrous results next month.
