Phillies enter final weekend needing wins against Tampa Bay

It all comes down to this...

Posted

We’ve reached the final series of the 2026 regular season with the Philadelphia Phillies (87-72) inexplicably still fighting for their playoff lives heading into the final three contests of the campaign. This weekend’s opponent is the Tampa Bay Rays, the top seed in the American League with a 96-63 record. However, it is unknown how Tampa Bay’s skipper Kevin Cash will roll out his lineup as he prepares his squad for the upcoming postseason sprint.

Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly does not have the same luxury, as the Phillies are still sitting with a magic number of two with three games left on the regular season slate, so expect a normal Phillies lineup until the club secures the final National League Wild Card invitation.

Phillies Notes

After losing two of three games to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Phillies have forced themselves into a winning predicament this weekend. The postseason formula is straightforward with three games left on the schedule: Win and get in. Fail, and the Phils need some help from the San Diego Padres to take down the Arizona Diamondbacks… with the caveat that San Diego clinched its postseason bid already.

The magic number math works like this: if the Phillies can win two games this weekend, it doesn’t matter what Arizona does against San Diego. If the Phillies can win one contest against Tampa Bay, they need at least one San Diego victory in their final series against the Snakes. Finally, if the Phillies are unable to find a win against the Rays, Phillies fans will need to get the coffee on the hate watch Arizona with a postseason bid hanging in the balance on Sunday afternoon.

While concerns linger surrounding Luis Arraez’s injury during last night’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Phillies will need to utilize the “next man up” mentality to find a win against Tampa Bay. With rainy conditions expected in the City of Brotherly Love this weekend, it very well could conjure up some magic from the 2008 World Championship celebration 18 years ago.

Still, the Phillies positioned themselves for a playoff opportunity largely without Arraez’s contributions this season.  Now, it is time for Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott, and the rest of the core group of Phillies stars to secure a fifth-straight postseason appearance (hopefully before Game #162 on Sunday afternoon).

Rays Notes

Tampa Bay arrives with one focus this weekend: don’t get hurt. It’s pretty simple for Tampa Bay after leading the A.L. in wins this season. The worst thing that could happen would be an injury from a meaningless road series to close out the regular season slog. With a four-game lead over the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay can get swept by Philadelphia this weekend and still be situated as the top seed in the A.L.

2026 A.L. All-Star representative Junior Caminero leads the team with 41 home runs and 99 RBIs on the campaign as he looks to become the eighth player in Rays franchise history to break the century mark, joining legendary franchise icons like Fred McGriff, Evan Longoria, and Aubrey Huff.

If there is a silver lining for Philly this weekend, it would be that Tampa Bay is barely above .500 with a 41-37 road record this season. Add in the fact that the Rays don’t exactly have a ton to play for this weekend, and it paints a picture where the Phillies SHOULD be partying this weekend. As we know all too well, games are played on brown dirt and green grass, so all Philly fans can do is sit and watch how the weekend unfolds.

When push comes to shove, the Phillies NEED to get into the postseason for a very simple reason. If nothing else, the city needs to show LeBron James what he can expect when the Philadelphia 76ers punch their postseason ticket next spring. Red October is a special experience in South Philly, and we’ve got limited chances to impress the biggest sports superstar in the world with the noise and passion of playoff baseball at Citizens Bank Park.  All the Phillies need to do is go out and win some ballgames this weekend to bring that October party back to South Philadelphia.
