Phillies seek series win versus Yankees to avoid disastrous losing homestand

After dropping their first two series from the break, the Phillies look to get back in the win column.

The Philadelphia Phillies will attempt to avoid a disastrous losing home stand to kickstart the second half of the MLB season with a matchup against the New York Yankees.

Philly has lost four of its first six games back from the All-Star break with series losses to the dismal New York Mets and the far more respectable Los Angeles Dodgers over the last week. It’s the first real bit of turbulence this flying ball club has faced since firing Rob Thompson after a 9-19 start to the season and installing interim manager Don Mattingly on April 28.

Phillies notes

When looking at the small three-game sample size from last week’s matchup, it is hard to believe the Phillies are right there with the Dodgers in competition for the World Series championship. Without a functional fifth starter and a right-handed power bat to protect the lefties in the lineup, the Phillies seem one step behind a true contender from the National League. Sure, the Milwaukee Brewers and/or the Atlanta Braves could disrupt the playoff rematch between LA and Philly.

At the end of July, is that a playoff nightmare Phillies fans want to relive again anyway? If the Phillies keep making little league mistakes on the bases, will October even stretch far enough to reach Los Angeles?

The Phillies starters have been solid this season, but the Andrew Painter experiment failed, and Philadelphia has been searching for a stopgap ever since his demotion a month ago. Alan Rangel has pitched well with a 5.40 ERA over his three starts despite being shuttled back and forth from Lehigh Valley to manage the bullpen. Mattingly will need to manage that dark spot in the rotation, a game the Phillies have not emerged victorious in since May 18 against the Cincinnati Reds.

Yankees' notes

Just like the Phillies did this weekend, the Yankees had to manage the weather in a series win against the Pittsburgh Pirates. New York dropped the opening series following the 2026 All-Star Game to the Dodgers before taking two of three games off the Pittsburgh Pirates. Now, the Yankees embark on a ten-game road trip, taking them to Philly before battling both teams from Chicago, Illinois, next week.

2026 MLB All-Stars Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger lead the offensive charge for New York. Rice has been in a class of his own for the Bronx Bombers with 30 home runs and 71 RBIs this season, followed by Bellinger (17 HRs), Jazz Chisholm Jr. (16 HR), and Paul Goldschmidt (15 HR). The stat column in New York is a bit perplexing given their star-studded lineup, much like you find with the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia will receive New York’s top three pitchers by innings pitched this season, in order. Cam Schlitter brings his team-leading 9 wins and 2.20 earned run average in 21 starts this season to the hill tonight in South Philly. Ryan Weathers has only won three ballgames this season, but he is the only other Yankees starter to cross the 100-inning threshold so far in 2026. New York sends out seven-game winner Will Warren to counter Sanchez on Sunday night.

It should be a fascinating matchup between the two squads in South Philadelphia this weekend. The Phillies can’t really be happy following a (mostly self-imposed) difficult series against the defending World Champions from Los Angeles.

With 10 days left until the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline, the heat on the season is about to be cranked up another notch as teams jockey to improve their rosters ahead of the final sprint towards the 2026 MLB Playoffs in two months.
