Edmundo Sosa swatted a go-ahead, two-run home run to put the Phillies on top of the L.A. Dodgers while most fans were sleeping on Sunday morning. Jhoan Duran sauntered into the ballgame to close down his 12th save of the season in an electric 4-3 victory over Los Angeles. With the victory, the Phillies secure a winning record on the road trip after sweeping the San Diego Padres and splitting the first two matchups against the defending World Series Champions. Philadelphia looks to close out the California road swing with a 5-1 record with another victory on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.
Some Philly fans on the East Coast may have still been awake as Alec Bohm provided an early 1-0 advantage with his solo home run to center field in the second inning. Los Angeles immediately responded in the bottom half of the frame. Alex Call singled to centerfield to score Will Smith and tie up the ballgame. The Dodgers pushed ahead in the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly from Santiago Espinal scored Call to give L.A. a 2-1 lead.
Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly turned to the bench in an important situation in the sixth inning. Sosa stepped in as a pinch hitter (for Brandon Marsh) with the bases loaded and one out, but Dodgers reliever Kyle Hurt neutralized the threat with a strikeout before inducing a weak ground ball to third base from Bohm to end the inning. Mookie Betts added another crooked number under “Los Angeles” in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to Justin Crawford in centerfield to give the Dodgers a 3-1 advantage with six outs remaining in the ballgame.
Crawford singled to open the eighth inning and scored on Bryce Harper's single to right field to close the gap to 3-2. Sosa stepped into the batter’s box once again, but this time he swung the scoreboard in Philadelphia’s favor following a 379-foot rocket into the first row of seats above the Dodger blue wall in left field to give the Phillies a late 4-3 lead.
Brad Keller and Duran handled the final six outs without an issue as the Phillies rolled to their 30th win of the 2026 campaign. Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo gave up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, while Jose Alvarado and Orion Kerkering also pitched in from the bullpen.
Philadelphia closes out the three-game series in California with an afternoon game at Dodger Stadium later today at 4:10 PM EST. Andrew Painter (1-5, 5.40 ERA) looks to finish off the month of May on a strong note. He is expected to face off against Yoshinobu Yamamoto (4-4, 3.09 ERA) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Following the contest, the Phillies will make the cross-country flight home before a scheduled off day on Monday. Philadelphia opens a six-game homestand with three games against San Diego (June 2-4) and three matchups against the Chicago White Sox (June 5-7) over the next week at Citizens Bank Park.
