USMNT creates World Cup history with dominant win over Australia

Posted

The USA have officially qualified for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a dominant display against Australia. With 6 points in the bag, their attention now turns to one final clash against Turkey - a tune-up game for the most intense phase of the tournament and one against a very difficult opponent.

If Turkey do not win their game later today, the US will emerge from Group D as winners. This is something they've not achieved since 1930. In fact, they've never won more than one game in the group stage...until today. A new era truly is upon us.

USMNT VS Australia recap

The US didn't exactly receive the best news before the game. Christian Pulisic would indeed be absent despite the knock picke dup in the opener appearing not to be of any significance. Assuming this was tactical rest ahead of the game against Turkey, it's still a bold decision to leave such a key player on the bench if able to play.

A positive start from the USMNT resulted in a quick score for the host nation. It was starboy Balogun once again causing damage, tearing down the wing and inside the box, looking to pass across goal. Cameron Burgess put the ball into the back of his own net by accident, giving the US a 1-0 lead inside 11 minutes and subsequently sending Seattle into an uproar.

Leckie almost gave the Aussies an immediate response, trying an awkward outside-the-boot shot from just inside the area, but couldn't quite find the angle to direct it goalwards.

Heading into the hydration break, the USMNT was clearly the better side, dominating possession with 63% and recording 5 shots within 25 minutes. Australia spent most of the opening portion stuck inside their own half and were unable to find any breathing room, constantly suffocated by a surprisingly aggressive American formation.

From there, it became the Balogun show. Fancy flicks, saucy spins, and a real sense of confidence from the AS Monaco striker kept the US on the front foot. In fact, the Aussies only managed one shot on goal after 36 minutes.

On the 43rd minute, Seattle's infamous 12th man roared again, but the goal was ruled out due to offside. Following a beautifully placed free-kick, curled in from near the touchline right to the edge of the box, a deflected shot fell into the airborne path of Alex Freeman, who out-dueled goalie Patrick Beach to knock it in, only to watch it get chalked off. Good news though, VAR saved the day to lift the preverbial roof off. It was Freeman's third international goal and one that would ultimately cement America's place in the knockout phase of the tournament.

And as much as soccer fans have gotten the short end of the straw for their celebrations from Europeans at times, it's fair to say this is undoubtedly....LIMBS!

The confidence just never stopped building. Dest almost nestled a third right before halftime following yet more trickery from his teammates, and as the possibility of making the knockouts only strengthened, so did their play. It was a dominant first half and you'd few to find many better this tournament in terms of suffocating an opponent.

Australia were left in a state of desperation entering the second half and opted to begin the new stanza with some fresh faces. But it mattered not. The game carried on where the first half left off. Another big look for Balogun 10 minutes in almost sent the US to a 3-0 lead, but the pace of the game seemed to slow after that.

Pennsylvania's own Matt Freese saw his first real piece of action on the 65th minute, stopping a fairly routine shot after a rare mistake from Tyler Adams, but the shot was comfortably saved. A slight panic soon resided as the fans burst into song at the hydration break.

In credit to Australia, they fought hard through the relentless 'USA' chants as the game neared its final chapter to try and create chances. The difficulty with that is knowing how defensively sound this team has become under Poch. They dealt with every cross, every bit of danger, almost to perfection.

A few scampers towards the end would've raised heart-rates as the game lost its flow with several substitutions disrupting play, but the US held firm, and went on to record its first clean sheet of the tournament - a huge moment for any Philadelphia Union fan who watched Matt Freese through the years.

This very much felt like a Balogun exhibition. Physically boxing out players, plenty of magic on the ball, and of course a contribution to that important goal, this was a showcase of just how talented this young man is.

The team will now turn its attention to their final group stage game against Turkey on June 25th at SoFi stadium.
