USMNT breaks World Cup record despite Turkiye defeat

Posted

In a night of historic highs and frustrating lows, the United States Men's National Team set a new World Cup scoring record but stumbled to a 3-2 defeat against Turkiye in their final Group D match on Thursday. The loss, a dramatic affair decided by a goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time, exposed the risks of head coach Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to heavily rotate his squad with the knockout stages in mind.

Defender Auston Trusty, a surprise starter, gave the USMNT a 1-0 lead less than three minutes in, firing home from a Sebastian Berhalter corner. Trusty’s strike was the 173rd goal of this expanded 48-team World Cup, surpassing the previous record of 172 set during the entire 2022 tournament in Qatar. The new mark came in just the 59th match of the 2026 edition, a testament to the increased goal-scoring from the expanded 104-game format.

However, the celebration was short-lived. Turkiye, already eliminated from the tournament, responded with urgency. Real Madrid's Arda Guler slipped his marker to equalize in the 10th minute, and Orkun Kokcu put the visitors ahead in the 31st minute, exposing a disjointed American squad that featured nine changes from the previous match. Pochettino had made the decision to bench key starters, Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun, and Antonee Robinson, all of whom were one yellow card away from a suspension that would rule them out of the crucial Round of 32 match.

There were silver linings buried in the defeat. Christian Pulisic came off the bench in the 57th minute for his first action since halftime of the opener against Paraguay, and the attack visibly sharpened the moment he stepped on the field. Gio Berhalter also came alive after a shaky start, scoring the equalizer before Türkiye's late winner spoiled the comeback.

Pochettino’s decision ultimately backfired in the result, but the bigger picture remains, the U.S. has already secured the top spot in Group D. The question now is whether the team can recover its rhythm and focus for its Round of 32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1, while celebrating a record that underscores the tournament's new, high-scoring era.
