Women's Club of Huntingdon Valley celebrates 75th anniversary

Posted

On Thursday, May 21, the Women's Club of Huntingdon Valley (WCHV) celebrated its 75th anniversary.  The WCHV was founded in 1951, and its goals were, and remain, to contribute to the community and develop the educational, social and civic interests of its members.

In 1952, wanting to contribute to the community, plans were made to start a circulating library.  It is through the Club's efforts that the Huntingdon Valley Library was opened in 1953.  Since 1958, the Club has awarded an annual scholarship to a deserving, female Lower Moreland High School senior.  Through the WCHV’s fundraising efforts, the annual scholarship continues and donations are made in support of the Library and other local organizations, including Laurel House and Nicole's Place in Huntingdon Valley as well as other women’s shelters.

To celebrate this significant milestone, WCHV members met for a luncheon at the Huntingdon Valley Country Club.

State Representative Nancy Guenst was an honored guest and she graciously joined the celebration.  In recognition of its excellence, Representative Guenst presented a Commendation for Community Service to the Club.

Pam Dull, Director of Library Services at the Huntingdon Valley Library, spoke about the Library’s deep relationship with the Club.  From its humble beginnings when the Library consisted of donated books on shelves in Yerkes Dry Cleaners with WCHV volunteers as staff through to today, the Library has served and enriched the Huntingdon Valley community.

The 2026 scholarship for academic excellence was presented to Anna Akhobadze, a very worthy recipient.  Following receipt of the award, Ms. Akhobadze, as well as her mother, gave thoughtful and inspiring speeches.

Outgoing Club officers were thanked and new officers were welcomed.  Another highlight of the day was when eight former Club Presidents who were in attendance took a bow and shared many memories.

There was camaraderie, laughter and a lot of sparkle throughout the event.  The WCHV is grateful to those who have come before and optimistic for its future.

For anyone interested in joining the WCHV, luncheon meetings are held September through May on the second Thursday of the month (noon - 2 p.m.) at Gloria Dei Fellowship Hall, 570 Welsh Rd.  To attend, please contact Denise at wchv1951@gmail.com.
