World Cup 2026 Day 2: Group B recap

Day two saw Canada open their first home World Cup. They got their first-ever point, tying with Bosnia and Herzegovina!

Posted

Day two of the World Cup saw two games, one from Group B and one from Group D. This was a bit unusual, as teams from the same group usually play on the same day or near each other. This was different because co-hosts Canada and the USA were given the same limelight that Mexico got on day one. The first game took us to Toronto for Canada's historic first match as World Cup hosts.

World Cup Group B - Matchday 1 (part 1)

Canada 1 - 1 Bosnia and Herzegovina

Jesse Marsch's Canada team wasn't at full fitness, missing star players Alphonso Davies and Moïse Bombito. However, they played in a flat 4-4-2 formation, ready to press their opponents into oblivion. Bosnia and Herzegovina already felt like party spoilers heading into this game, having beaten Italy in a playoff to reach the Group stage of the tournament. Could they do the same in their first game at the 2026 World Cup?

The first half proved that you don't need a lot of possession to be effective and take the lead. Bosnia and Herzegovina had little of the ball, but were compact defensively. Canada tried to break them down but failed. One of the few chances Bosnia had came in the 21st minute, when they earned a corner. The result was a ball in a dangerous area, a flick-on, and then a nodded header in for a goal by Jovo Lukic. Canada pushed for an equalizer but couldn't find it in the first half, as Bosnia and Herzegovina stifled all their chances.

In the second half, we saw more of the same. Canada pressed forward, Bosnia defended for their lives, and then looked to exploit wide spaces for counterattacks. It looked like the game would end 1-0 to the scrappy Bosnia and Herzegovina side after their captain, Sead Kolasinac, made a goal-line clearance to stop a Canadian attack, hitting the crossbar in the process. Later, two Canadian subs linked up to salvage the game. Promise David flicked on an attack to Cyle Larin, who beat his marker and got a shot past the Bosnia defensive line to tie the game with just about 10 minutes left.

The match would end 1-1; both teams had chances to win, but neither did. Now, the two will have to look to future group games for an elusive win.

Day 2, Group B, Round-up:

The two nations will take a point each after their first match. This is Canada's first point at a World Cup ever, but they will feel hard done not to have gotten a win in front of 45,000 fans. Bosnia and Herzegovina show they are going to be a hard out. They don't win a whole lot of games, but they don't lose either, which could send them to the knockout rounds in this expanded World Cup.
