All you need to know about the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony

Posted

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is finally upon us, and we're just a few heartbeats away from the City of Brotherly Love catching World Cup fever. Before we get to the biggest sporting tournament in the world, first comes the opening ceremony, and on America's 250th birthday, it doesn't get much bigger.

If you're new to the World Cup, the opening ceremony is kind of self-explanatory, but the closest parallel we can draw is that of the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Only this time, three nations will open their arms to the culture, passion, and energy of soccer fans around the world.

The first game of the tournament takes place in Mexico and will see a 2010 World Cup rematch between the host nation and South Africa. Who could ever forget that incredible Tshabalala goal that went on to arguably define the entire tournament?

As a result, the opening ceremony will take place on June 11 in Mexico City, right before the opening game of the tournament. The festivities then roll into Toronto on June 12 before Canada's clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and finally the US on the same day, before they play Panama in SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles.

Kicking things off in Mexico is none other than Shakira and Burna Boy, who will be joined by the likes of J Balvin, Danny Ocean, Tyla, and Alejandro Fernandez. Shakira needs no introduction, but she's considered World Cup royalty by many due to her hit 'Waka Waka' — the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Alanis Morissette will be pumping up the crowds in BMO Field, while Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, and Jessie Reyes will join her for a star-studded opening.

And in the US, Katy Perry will be headlining the event, having already performed at Super Bowl XLIX.

The Mexico opening ceremony schedule for June 11 is as follows:

12 p.m. EST: Opening ceremony
2 p.m. EST: Mexico vs South Africa

The Canada opening ceremony schedule for June 12 is as follows:

12:30 p.m. EST: Opening ceremony
2 p.m. EST: Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina

The US opening ceremony schedule for June 12 is as follows:

4:30 p.m. EST: Opening ceremony

6 p.m. EST: USA vs Panama

The fun doesn't end there...

Right before the World Cup final, Colombian sensation Shakira will headline a Super Bowl-esque halftime show.

She'll be joined by the likes of BTS, Burna Boy, and Madonna.
